FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How will 225 kids swim at the same time?
Short answer they will not. So how does the
swim start work? Athletes will start in groups called waves
and will be assigned both a lane number and starting time.
Each wave will have ten participants that swim in one of ten
assigned lanes and will start at an assigned starting time.
Waves will be separated by two minutes to make sure participants
have plenty of time to finish their swim length before the next wave
begins and to help minimized the number of participants on the bike
course at one time.
You will be able to determine what wave and lane you
are in based on your racer number (racer numbers are assigned by the
race director and will be given out at packet pick-up). For
example if you are racer 010. You are in wave 1, lane 0.
If you are racer 124, you are in wave 12, lane 4. Wave start
times will be posted at packet pickup and throughout the Valdese
Aquatic Center on race evening. VOLUNTEERS WILL HELP
PARTICIPANTS GET IN THE RIGHT PLACE ON RACE DAY.
As you can see, it is very important to be on time
at the swim start or you will have to wait until the last wave to
start the race.
Where will bikes and shoes be during the swim and how
do I get to them to prepare for the bike and run?
In the Transition Area each participant will be
assigned a transition spot that will be marked on the ground by
spray paint. Participants must keep their bike and gear inside
their assigned spot. Once athletes exit the swim area, they
run to the transition area and get their shoes and helmet on and
must walk or run their bikes out of the transition area to the bike
mount line before starting to pedal. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE
DISQUALIFIED IMMEDIATELY AND NOT ALLOWED TO FINISH THE RACE FOR
RIDING IN THE TRANSITION AREA!!!! HELMETS MUST BE WORN AND BUCKLED
PRIOR TO MOUNTING THE BIKE OR THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED
IMMEDIATELY AND NOT ALLOWED TO FINISH THE RACE!!!!
Clearly identifiable volunteers will help
participants get from the swim area to the transition area and will
be reminding participants not to mount their bikes before the bike
mount line and to buckle their helmets before mounting their bikes.
